ROBOTAXI ECONOMICS
What does a robotaxi ride really cost?
A robotaxi only makes money if its cost per paid kilometre is below what riders pay. This page explains the main cost drivers and lets you test your own assumptions.
All values are illustrative assumptions, not sourced figures.
Annual cost per vehicle: $33,867
Revenue per vehicle per year: $57,600 (48,000 paid km × $1.20). Excludes taxes, financing costs, R&D and platform commissions unless you include them in the inputs.
The five levers that matter
- Utilisation. Fixed costs (vehicle, insurance, depot, software) are spread over every kilometre. A car that drives twice as far per year roughly halves its fixed cost per km.
- Paid share. Empty kilometres to pick-ups and chargers cost money but earn nothing. Cost per paid km is the number to compare with fares.
- Safety drivers. A driver on board for every operating hour usually outweighs every other cost. Removing the driver is the main step-change in robotaxi economics, and in Europe most services still carry one or need remote supervision.
- Remote operator ratio. Driverless fleets still need remote assistance. One operator for 3 vehicles and one for 30 give very different costs per km.
- Vehicle cost. Lower vehicle prices help, but in a mature fleet depreciation is only one part of the cost. Forbes (Oct 2025) argued that it matters less than often assumed.
How the calculator works
Annual cost per vehicle = depreciation (vehicle cost ÷ life) + energy and maintenance (per km × km per year) + insurance + overhead + safety driver (hourly cost × operating hours, if on board) + remote operations (hourly cost × operating hours ÷ vehicles per operator). Cost per paid km = annual cost ÷ (km per year × paid share). Break-even fare = cost per paid km. Financing, taxes, R&D, platform commissions and accidents are excluded unless you add them to overhead.
